Writing scripts for mass media such as feature films, television serials, episodes, web series, television productions, or video games is called script & screenplay writing, or screenwriting. Freelancers often work in this field. Researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the script, screenplay, and dialogue, and delivering it to development executives in the required format is the responsibility of screenwriters. 

Thus, screenwriters have a significant influence on the creative direction and emotional impact of a screenplay and, arguably, the finished film. A screenwriter either pitches original ideas to producers with the hopes of being optioned or sold, or is commissioned by a producer to write a screenplay based on a concept, true story, existing screen work, or literary work, such as a novel, poem, play, comic book, or short story. 

Media and entertainment industries use screenwriting in many different ways. Often, multiple writers work on the same script at different stages of development with different tasks.
